About Al Hancock

Safety is definitely part of his culture as there is no second chance when climbing…safety is life.

My name is Al Hancock and my goal is to take you on an incredible journey through the eyes of a mountaineer. My hope is to ignite your spirit of adventure – your willingness to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. The challenges I tackle are made of rock, ice and snow; the “mountains” you face are every bit as challenging. I encourage you to seek out and climb your mountain, wherever and whatever it may be.

Mountaineering is a passion. It’s something I love. WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION LIE?

Over the past decade, Al Hancock has been quietly making Canadian history; now he wants to take his journey to a new level, backed by sponsors who align with the values of adventure, exploration, passion, commit-ment, respect and safety.

A former journeyman millwright and oil sands maintenance supervisor, Al completed The Seven Summits in 2008 and has been part of more than 20 expedition-style climbs.

In the spring of 2014, Al made Canadian history by ascending the peak of Mount Makalu. Hancock followed that up in June with a successful climb of the extremely chal-lenging K2, the world’s second highest peak. On both occasions he served as expedition leader. To date, he’s successfully scaled seven of the world’s 14 tallest mountains, all of them over 8,000 metres, including Everest twice.

A Canadian First

His plan, over the next three years, is to become the first Canadian, and only the second North American, to summit all 14 8,000-metre peaks.

So why does he do it? “The mountains choose me,” he says. “I am like a piece of metal drawn to a magnet. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always had a sense of ad-venture. Making the choice to test myself to the limit, to push toward what seems to be an impossible goal is what life is all about. I want to live life to the fullest in this present moment.”

Achieving Peak Performance on the Worlds Highest Mountains or in Business

Al believes there are so many parallels between climbing the world’s highest mountains, and the challenges we all face in our business every day.

To achieve something that seems impossible, you’ve got to first set the goal, them pre-pare, just when you think the answer is ’I can’t it is quite probable that the answer is ‘I can’

Personal and professional successes go to those with focused commitment, the ones that show up everyday and do the work, until they reach their goals.

I like what George Mallory, one of the first to scale Mount Everest, had to say about the mountaineering process, and I’m paraphrasing here: ‘The struggle of life itself is up-ward and forever upward. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the goal of life.’”
